Nominations Deadline Nears for MTC Transportation Awards Program

OAKLAND, CA, March 22, 2012... Has an organization in your community worked hard to promote alternatives to driving alone, boost smart growth or encourage climate-friendly behavior? Are you wowed by local efforts to improve and promote public transit service? Is your bus driver exceptionally friendly and helpful? Nominate an organization, project or individual for a Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) award by end of day on Saturday, March 31.

MTC is the regional transportation planning agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area and, for the past 35 years, its “Excellence in Motion” awards program has recognized individuals, projects and organizations that have had a positive impact on transportation in the region. Winners will be selected by a jury representing MTC and the community. Past winners include Stanford University for its alternative transportation program; Cycles of Change, Street Smarts, Safe Routes to Schools and Cool the Earth for educating the next generation to make environmentally friendly transportation choices; Fannie Mae Barnes, who broke through a long-entrenched gender barrier to become the first female cable car grip for San Francisco Muni; and Brian McLean, Vacaville’s fleet and transit manager, for establishing the Solano County Intercity Taxi Scrip Program for disabled residents — transforming lives by providing 24/7 access to transportation. Recognition has also gone to volunteers, community leaders and government employees dedicated to improving transportation for Bay Area residents.
