Moving Costs: A Transportation Funding Guide for the San Francisco Bay Area
This small but information-rich guide -- published by MTC in January of 1999 -- explains the various ways an interested citizen can influence funding decisions. The core of the book consists of detailed tables summarizing over 50 federal, state and local sources of money, indicating the amount available, eligible uses, who may claim it, and who determines which projects benefit. The guide also includes a glossary that decodes jargon, acronyms and other forms of transportation "financese," and contact information for 37 agencies and service providers that have a say in how transportation money is spent. Equipped with this guide, the funding explorer can set out with confidence.

Paratransit Resource Guide
Under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, public transit systems must offer door-to-door, wheelchair-accessible taxi and van services to customers whose disabilities prevent them from taking regular, fixed-route bus, train and ferry lines. Now MTC has published a guide to help members of the region's disabled community navigate this web of specialized services. The large-type guide provides phone numbers and information on fares, days and hours of operation, and service areas for 21 paratransit systems, also explaining how to arrange long-distance, interagency/intercounty trips.

Statistical Summary of Bay Area Transit Operators
Do you dream about transportation statistics? It may be time for a vacation. On the other hand, why not yield to the obsession and curl up with this new title from MTC? Intended for transit operators, private consultants, and academic and industry researchers, as well as elected officials and professionals at all levels of government, the report tracks five years' worth (1993 through 1997) of audited budgets and performance measures for 16 of the region's largest public transit systems -- including operating cost per passenger, passengers per revenue-vehicle mile, labor efficiency and farebox recovery ratios. You'll also find such general information as number of employees and fare structure, and a capsule history for each system.

RIDES Online: www.rides.org
What does it really cost you to drive alone to work? You can find out with the Commute Calculator, one of the nifty features of the recently retooled Web site for RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, the regional ridesharing agency. If, as the sponsors hope, the calculation drives you to seriously consider carpooling, you'll find everything you need to get started at this virtual one-stop shop for commuters. You can request a free "matchlist" of people with similar commutes and schedules who are actively seeking carpool or vanpool riders, find out about ridesharing incentives, and tap into lists of park-and-ride lots and diamond lanes around the region. And if carpooling isn't practical for you, the site also has plenty to offer on other commute alternatives, namely public transit, bicycling and telecommuting.
