Service Authority for Freeways and Expressways

SAFE and FSP statistics
An average of 500 calls a day come into the California Highway Patrol dispatch center from the region's network of 3,500 call boxes, installed along 1,100-plus miles of highways and expressways at intervals of a quarter mile to two miles. The Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) added more than 19 miles to its service area last year, bringing the total coverage to 264 miles of the Bay Area's most congested freeways. The FSP contracts with nine private towing companies that together provide a fleet of 48 tow trucks (plus four back-ups) as well as four pickup trucks. The 117 specially trained drivers handle an average of 8,000 incidents a month.
