Transactions 1992 Transactions Retrospective: 1992

Rail was again in the news in 1992, with a groundbreaking for the Colma BART station, and major administrative and operational changes for the Peninsula's Caltrain, including the debut of service to Gilroy.

We hearkened back to the 1991 passage of ISTEA by spotlighting the Bay Area Partnership, a pioneering alliance of some 30 public agencies dedicated to fighting congestion and smog, formed in response to the bill. One of the group's first moves was to launch the Freeway Service Patrol -- a fleet of roving tow trucks to help keep traffic moving.

ISTEA also served as the impetus for the rise of "smart" transportation innovations, as we noted in the first of a series of articles on the subject. The transportation/land use nexus became another recurring theme, kicked into high gear by MTC's study of the controversial Mid-State Tollway proposal. We wrapped up the year with one of Transactions' most popular issues ever: a transportation glossary that defined everything from AA (alternatives analysis) to VMT (vehicle miles traveled). Look for an upcoming update on transportation buzzwords for the new millennium.
