Transactions 1994 Transactions Retrospective: 1994

Money was definitely on our minds in 1994. Transactions reported that the state's transportation budget had a gaping $4 billion to $5 billion hole, while Bay Area transit operators were confronting an enormous funding shortfall in fully meeting the requirements of the American With Disabilities Act. And, a striking photo showing a jagged tear through an image of the Bay Bridge made a strong point about a funding gap the size of the San Andreas fault in the state's critical seismic retrofit program.

Notwithstanding the funding crunch, some transit projects in the region were able to forge ahead. We reported on the delivery of a state-of-the-art catamaran for the Alameda / Oakland Ferry Service and the debut of express shuttles connecting BART and Caltrain to San Francisco International Airport. Construction of a new generation of rail cars merited a cover story, with intriguing photos of cavernous car shells being transformed into fully functioning trains.

In a lighter vein, a playful photo of our chief statistician playing peek-a-boo with a couple of CD-ROMs introduced a series of profiles of MTC staff.
