Transactions 1995 Transactions Retrospective: 1995

Forces of nature loomed large in 1995, first with a report on the devastation to transportation infrastructure from a massive earthquake in Kobe, Japan -- which served as a wake-up call to the Bay Area -- then with a feature about the plethora of potholes around the region caused by an unusually rainy winter. Transportation also was buffeted by less tangible forces in the form of the Internet and the telecommunications revolution. In an article on the phenomenon of "teleliving," we explored how the information superhighway is facilitating virtual offices, distance education and telemedicine -- and potentially reducing the need to travel.

While business may increasingly be conducted online, there is no cyber-substitute for a ship, a rail car or a truck when it comes time to move a load of physical goods, readers were reminded in an article on the enduring importance of the shipping industry, appropriately titled "Freight Won't Wait." We wrapped up the year on a high-tech note, with a cover story on transportation research and development in the Bay Area and across Northern California.
