Transactions Retrospective: 1996
Transactions '96 marked a year of notable anniversaries: the 25th anniversary of MTC
itself, the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Interstate Highway System, the 10th anniversary of
California's highway call boxes, the final year (and start of reauthorization) of the 1991
federal ISTEA bill and the one-year anniversary of San Francisco Muni's F-Market Street
historic streetcar line, which earned top honors in MTC's 1996 Transportation Awards
program.
There was good news for the Bay Area's rail network: The long-awaited Colma BART station
opened, and the federal government pledged funding for the Tasman West light-rail line in
Santa Clara County and BART's extension to San Francisco International Airport.
Transactions also noted SFO's ambitious expansion plans, as well as those of the
region's two other major airports: San Jose and Oakland. The boom in airport construction
was paralleled by a $6 billion bonanza in ongoing highway and bridge construction and
retrofit projects, illustrated by stunning aerial views and dramatic construction site
shots.
