Transactions 1997 Transactions Retrospective: 1997

"A couple of them are the stuff of picture postcards, engineering marvels that soar several hundred feet above the water and reach for the sky with daring, gravity-defying towers." So began a cover story highlighting expansion and retrofit plans for the region's toll bridges.

A subsequent issue zeroed in on plans to rebuild the eastern half of the then 60-year-old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Efforts by MTC and Caltrans to develop a functional and dis-tinctive design for the new span have "captured the public's and the engineering/design community's imagination unlike any other such exercise in recent memory," we reported. In a related development, the Legislature agreed to pay for the new span's construction plus retrofitting of four other local bridges.

Proving there's more than one way to cross the Bay, ferryboats, too, rated a Transactions spread and a handsome watercolor. Rounding out the year, we marked the 20th anniversary of RIDES, the regional rideshare agency, while for fun, we challenged trivia lovers to identify persons for whom Bay Area transportation landmarks are named.
