Transactions 1998 Transactions Retrospective: 1998

Whether you are a rail fan, car buff, museum aficionado or just enthralled with the nuances of transportation legislation and financing, Transactions '98 had something for you. To rail fans' delight, we reported Bay Area rail is on the rise with new BART, Caltrain, streetcar and intercity rail projects. Car buffs got the unvarnished truth in our issue about "cars of tomorrow," which uncovered the shortcomings of electric cars and the potential of hybrid vehicles. Whatever your favorite mode of travel -- flying, driving or train-tripping -- we covered it in a unique issue on five dozen transportation museums in California and Nevada.

As the options for the new span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge narrowed, we devoted an issue to showcasing the finalists -- a single-tower suspension bridge and a single-tower cable-stayed design -- with words and computer-generated images.

In what was arguably the year's top story, regions thirsting for another round of "Ice Tea" (see 1991) got their wish with passage of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, or TEA 21.
