Maps and Stats:
New Report Is a Data Gold Mine
Which South Bay carpool lane can shave 40 minutes off your morning commute? Which stretch
of diamond lanes is the region’s most popular? Can you name the Bay Area cities with
the smoothest streets? How about the ones with the most potholes? Can you name the freeway
segment that claims the prize for the biggest Bay Area backup? How many hours a day do Bay
Area travelers waste stuck in gridlock?
Whether you’re a trivia buff or a reporter or researcher digging for facts,
you’ll find answers to these and myri-ad other transportation puzzlers in Bay
Area Transportation: State of the System 2002, a new publication from MTC and Caltrans
District 4.
The report collects in one place data on freeway, local roadway, transit, and bicycle and
pedestrian travel, as well as air travel and goods movement. In a series of
easy-to-understand tables, graphs and maps, it gauges how the Bay area transportation
network performed in 2001 (or the most recent time period for which data is available) and
discusses trends going back up to five years.
