Blueprint for the 21st Century:
Taking the Public's Pulse
As part of the Blueprint for the 21st Century analysis, MTC conducted a public opinion
poll of Bay Area residents and a parallel survey of local officials in February of this
year. The results? Transit trumps roads and new taxes and fees get a thumbs up as ways of
dealing with the region's transportation challenges.
Hefty majorities of respondents to both polls indicated that a high priority should be
given to increasing public transit when battling traffic congestion, whereas neither group
could muster a majority that felt the same way about roads.
Equally notable were the large percentages of citizens and local officials who favored
increasing taxes or fees to pay for transportation improvements. Respondents in the public
opinion survey also were polled regarding the merits of specific projects being considered
for their particular county. For a more complete analysis of the findings, visit the
Blueprint area of MTC's Web site.
