In 2003, some 25 percent of the 1.5 million vehicles crossing the region’s seven Caltrans toll bridges each day paid their toll electronically via a FasTrak® transponder, with peak-hour usage approaching 30 percent. The MTC-run Bay Area Toll Authority hopes to boost usage to a level closer to that seen on the Golden Gate Bridge (run by a special district), where approximately 70 percent of the vehicles crossing during the morning peak period use FasTrak®.
