Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher has been a strong voice for Bay Area transportation in
Washington for the past four years, and her work is being honored with this year's John F.
Foran Legislative Award.
Representing the 10th Congressional District, which encompasses the East Bay suburbs,
Rep. Tauscher has taken the initiative to tackle some of the Bay Area's toughest
transportation problems.
As Steve Heminger, MTC's deputy executive director, explained, "Congresswoman Tauscher
has been a true champion for the Bay Area on the House Transportation Committee. She has
fought to protect the ability of local officials to make the best transportation investment
decisions for their own communities.
"And," Heminger said, "she has been instrumental in delivering critical federal funding
for the region's rail expansion program, which has produced new rail service in the East
Bay and the Silicon Valley, and will help bring BART to the San Francisco International
Airport in 2002."
| The John F. Foran Legislative Award was created in 1986 upon
the retirement of state Sen. John Foran, a longtime friend of transportation who is
the author of the bill that created MTC. The Foran Award is presented annually to
the state or federal legislator whose efforts best sustain excellence in
transportation policy. |
