MTC Honors Dutra
During the course of 2001, Fremont Assemblyman John Dutra
sponsored two major bills designed to put transportation infrastructure in the Bay Area and
across the state on much firmer financial footing -- a feat that has earned him MTC's John
F. Foran Legislative Award.
The chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, Dutra authored and steered to
passage Assembly Constitutional Amendment 4, which calls for permanently dedicating the
state sales tax on gasoline to transportation purposes. Appearing on the March 2002 ballot
as Proposition 42, the measure could swell the Bay Area's transportation coffers by $5.8
billion between now and 2025. Dutra also authored Assembly Bill 1171, which will cover up
to $2.5 billion in cost overruns associated with the seismic strengthening program for
state toll bridges in the Bay Area.
Assemblyman Dutra was the only award recipient this year; a full-scale MTC Awards
Program will resume in 2002.
