November/December 2000
Toll Collection Goes
High-Tech
Photo: Barrie Rokeach |
All seven of the Bay Area's state-owned toll bridges are scheduled to have
electronic toll collection in place by the end of 2000. (The Bay Area's only
non-state-owned toll bridge, the Golden Gate, installed its own electronic toll collection
system in July of 2000.)
To use the system, motorists establish a special FasTrak debit account, and receive a
transponder to attach to their windshields. As motorists drive through the toll plaza
without stopping, the toll is automatically deducted from their account.
To apply for a FasTrak account and receive a transponder:
- call 888.725.8725,
- download an application from www.dot.ca.gov/fastrak, or
- drop by the FasTrak Service Center
Park N' Shop Shopping Center
1849 Willow Pass Road
Concord.
Funding for the FasTrak project is being allocated to Caltrans by the MTC-run Bay Area
Toll Authority from tolls collected on the state-owned bridges.
