2002 Transportation Awards:
Excellence in Motion
It has been two years since MTC last staged the Transportation Awards Program. While we
decided to take a break from our annual tradition (and transition to a biannual program),
the region’s armies of dedicated transportation employees, volunteers and leaders did
no such thing. They continued to toil day and night to keep the region’s vast
transportation network humming, and find ways to tweak the system to make it more efficient
and user friendly. In fact, our “talent search” yielded a bumper crop of
eligible people and projects this year, making the jury’s job tougher than usual.
In the end, we selected 21 individuals and organizations to honor this year. Scan the
articles in this showcase of winners,
and some themes begin to emerge. You’ll find several innovative projects aimed at
boosting the safety of the region’s travelers, be they riding in a car or walking.
There is a trio of news people who appreciate the vital importance of transportation to the
Bay Area’s economy and lifestyle, and a legislator who also keeps transportation at
the top of his agenda.
One winner is honored for steering a massive transit system with hundreds of thousands of
riders back to health, while another is honored for helping a fledgling van-based service
that caters to a hundred
or so kids get off the ground.
We see the Awards Program as a form of “tech transfer.” Our hope is that the
innovative ideas and techniques generated by this year’s winners will spark similar
efforts around the region. And we are sure that when we come back two years from now, there
will be even more achievements to celebrate.
