In Memoriam:
Miguel Iglesias MTC staff lost a talented
colleague in July when Miguel Iglesias died at the age of 43 after battling pancreatic
cancer.
Iglesias joined MTC in 1989 as an assistant planner analyst/modeler, progressing to
associate planner in 1992. At MTC, Iglesias took the lead in preparing travel demand
forecasts for a number of high profile planning studies.
A native of Spain, Iglesias took a leave from MTC in 1991–92 to teach transportation
planning at a university in Madrid and to work for a Spanish consulting firm. Iglesias
initially came to the States to teach Spanish at a college in Iowa. He returned to earn a
master’s in city planning at U.C. Berkeley in the early 1980s, after which he went to
work as a transportation planner for the city of Berkeley.
A resident of Benicia, Iglesias was an avid amateur winemaker who, with his wife Valerie,
had recently purchased a ranch on which he had planned to plant a vineyard. “Anyone
who knew Miguel remarked on his vitality,” said his family in a statement. In
addition to his wife, Iglesias is survived by his daughters Rebecca and Samantha.
