Work continues apace on a striking suspension span to replace
the aging westbound span of the Carquinez Bridge. The two towers were complete as of late spring 2002, and crews have just finished spinning the two main cables that will support the deck, which will include a lane for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Each cable is composed of a bundle of 37 strands made up of 232 high-tensile strength steel galvanized wires. The cables will be painted a deep red to complement the gray concrete towers, which rise 410 feet above the water line.

MTC is funding the $480 million Regional Measure 1 project (a figure that includes the Crockett interchange and dismantling the old bridge) in its role as the Bay Area Toll Authority. The Bay Area’s first new suspension bridge in seven decades — and the first suspension bridge of this magnitude built anywhere in the United States in the last 30 years — is expected to open to traffic in October 2003.
