Bay Bridge

Gateway Park

February 2010
An exciting opportunity to develop a park on the Oakland shoreline is materializing in conjunction with the construction of the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

A "gateway park" at the new span's touchdown will become a welcoming entry to the East Bay, transforming a bleak, nondescript Bay frontage into a natural haven, landscaped and will a range of amenities.

In addition to providing vistas of the new bridge and the Bay, the park would connect the bicycle/pedestrian path on the new eastern span with the Bay Trail and the nine-mile-long East Shore State Park, both currently under development. From the bridge, bicyclists and pedestrians could travel north through Emeryville as far as Richmond and south as far as San Leandro. MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority is one of nine public agencies making up the Gateway Park Working Group that is overseeing the effort.
