Regional Pedestrian Planning

In this page:

Active Transportation Working Group

In 2001 MTC established a Regional Pedestrian Committee to begin to address pedestrian-related issues in the Bay Area. The RPC adopted the following vision statement to guide the RPC work:

"Everyone is a pedestrian at some time, and should feel safe while walking. The Bay Area is committed to a Pedestrian Program that uses the best engineering, public education, and law enforcement practices to minimize pedestrian injuries and fatalities. The Pedestrian Program will work at the regional and community level to make walking a safe, convenient, and healthy activity."

In 2012, the RPC and the Regional Bicycle Working Group were merged into the Active Transportation Working Group.

Safe Routes to Transit

Regional Measure 2, the $1 bridge toll increase, is funding projects that enhance pedestrian and bicycle access to transit stations. TransForm is administering the program. The first and second of five $4 million funding cycles were completed in 2005 and 2007; the official call for projects and application materials are posted on the TransForm website. The next call for projects is expected in early Summer 2009.

Pedestrian Districts Study

MTC commissioned the Bay Area Pedestrian Districts Study in 2006 to encourage and improve pedestrian planning in the Bay Area. The goal of the Pedestrian Districts Study is to explore the use of pedestrian districts as a concept for creating better pedestrian environments in the Bay Area. Through the development of the pedestrian district typologies and real-life case studies, the study identifies the types and costs of pedestrian facilities that have the greatest impact on improving the pedestrian environment.
