Double-sided pedestrian crossing signs

Standard pedestrian crossing signs (W11 in the MUTCD, W54 in the Caltrans Traffic Manual) are installed on both sides of the approaching roadway at an uncontrolled crosswalk. This intersection signing is in addition to the nearside pedestrian warning signs posted at and in advance of the crosswalk. This treatment includes advance markings and signs, double-posted pedestrian crossing signs at the left and right sides of the crossing, and painted red curb or additional signs designating No Parking zones to assure adequate stopping sight distance given the speed of approaching traffic and the width of the curb lane.
objective To provide additional notice to drivers that they are approaching a pedestrian crossing.
applications Uncontrolled pedestrian crossings
target population Motorists
crash type Pedestrian R/W Violation-Non-intersection
advantages
  • Provides drivers more visibility of the warning sign, especially if following a large vehicle
disadvantages
  • Additional cost of installing and maintaining another sign for each approach can be considerable if this treatment is used at a large number of crossings
pointers Not as effective at locations already saturated with signs.  Fluorescent yellow-green signs are more effective.
cost Low, approximately $400 for the two signs needed per approach.
