High visibility signs

Pedestrian signs made of the FHWA-approved fluorescent yellow-green color are posted at crossings.
objective To improve pedestrian safety at crossings by using the fluorescent yellow-green color on warning signs to enable drivers to detect these signs with higher frequency and to recognize them at further distances with greater accuracy.
applications Pedestrian, school, and bicycle crossings. These signs are most effective if made of high-reflectivity material.
target population Motorists
crash type Pedestrian R/W Violation-Intersection, Excessive Speed
advantages
  • The fluorescent color attracts drivers' attention to crossings
disadvantages
  • Overuse of this treatment may negate its effectiveness over the long term
pointers The MUTCD recommends that, if using fluorescent yellow-green backgrounds for crossing signs, a systematic approach featuring one background color within a zone or area should be used
cost Low, from $200 to $300 per sign, depending on the type and size, including labor and materials for installation. If the sign will be installed on an existing pole, the cost of the sign itself is $50-$100.
