Signalized driveway treatments

At intersections where one leg is a private apron-type driveway, the green signal indication for drivers on the driveway approach is replaced by a flashing red indication. Pedestrian signals are provided for people crossing the driveway. The red indication for drivers flashes red when the pedestrian signal across the driveway displays DON'T WALK. A separate solid red indication is displayed when the pedestrian signal across the driveway displays WALK.
objective To provide positive right-of-way assignment across apron-type driveways where conflicts between pedestrians and drivers most often occur. Where new driveways are constructed at signalized locations, full-height curb returns are recommended, such that conventional green-yellow-red signal heads can be provided to driveway users.
applications At locations where there is moderate pedestrian demand to cross the apron-type driveway and moderate use of the driveway at an intersection that is already signalized.
