Walk, Bike & Roll to School on October 7

Thousands of Bay Area students will celebrate International Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. Forty schools from seven of the nine Bay Area counties have registered as participating in this year’s events – see the full list of participating schools from across the nation. 

MTC’s One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) program funds the Regional Safe Routes to School grant program, providing about $6 million in federal grants each year for grants to cities, counties and county transportation agencies. The Safe Routes to School programs provide training, education and encouragement for students and parents, and help create safer routes for walking, biking and rolling to school.

Resources for Everyone

• The Alameda County Safe Routes to School website has toolkits and other resources. 
• The Contra Costa Transportation Authority has helpful guides about e-bikes and e-scooters for parents, along with other resources.
• Throughout the fall, Marin County is hosting Walk & Roll Wednesdays on the first Wednesday of each month. There are suggested route maps by city to help families get started, and a special toolkit for teens that encourage them to rally their friends and younger students.
• The Safe Routes to School San Francisco website has resources for families and for school staff with tips on how to walk, bike, carpool or take transit to school. Walk & Roll to School Week will be celebrated from October 5-9. “Walk Champions” are leading the charge on activities for each participating school, and the class who wins this year’s “Golden Sneaker Contest” will get a special trophy.
• The San Mateo County Safe Routes to School program, in conjunction with the San Mateo County Office of Education, will be hosting an E-Bike Symposium on October 19.
• Santa Clara Unified School District website offers Back-to-School Safety Tips (in English and Spanish), school walking maps and more.
• The Solano County Safe Routes to School website has resources and helpful videos, including materials in Spanish.
• Sonoma Safe Routes to School is celebrating walking and rolling to school during the entire month of October, with rides, an assembly, a bike train and more. Check out the events calendar.
