Located in Oakland at the foot of the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline park (formerly known as Gateway Park) provides access to the shoreline, with dramatic vistas of the bay and bridge.

This distinct “Gateway to the Bay” connects the East Bay to Treasure Island via the bicycle/pedestrian path on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

The 22.47-acre park opened to the public in October 2020, and highlights the industry, infrastructure and ecology that have shaped the history of this spectacular stretch of shoreline.

Bay Bridge East Span Path

Opened to the public in 2013, the Bay Bridge Trail carries bicyclists and pedestrians across the majestic East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, connecting the Oakland shoreline with Yerba Buena Island.

About Judge John Sutter

The park, a designated regional shoreline, is named in honor of Judge John Sutter, a former East Bay Regional Park District Director and founding member and former president of Citizens for Regional Recreations and Parks. In 1967, he proposed a park at this site for public recreation and access.

West Oakland Link

The Gateway Park project originally included development of a trail to link West Oakland to the park and the San Francisco Bay Trail.

That component was split from the park project in 2015, and the trail portion that will link the West Oakland community to the shoreline is called the West Oakland Link. That project is now in the environmental review phase.
